Behind the scenes: Why I chose to blog...

I've actually always wanted a baking blog and follow other baking blogs regularly. I guess I thought that in order to start one I would need like 1000 recipes. Whenever I have made something that has turned out really good I always wish that I would have photographed the process so that I could document it…but I never do. I have many many baking pics on my phone that I don’t really know what to do with but sometimes the items look so nice I cannot help but to take a photo.

I think that I have always liked baking. My mom used to always make homemade muffins and decorated birthday cakes for my birthday - Almost 20 years ago (yikes). I also took the first level cake decorating course at Michael’s and that added to my skills and interest. I currently live outside of the city with my DH, Cole, and two furbabies, Phillip and Diesel. Believe it or not, DH is not a 'sweets' kind of guy...guess it's true that opposites attract haha. In the chilly winter months, I love staying in on a frigid Sunday to try a new recipe. In the summer months, I like baking with apples from our tree. I, like everyone else, also have my share of baking fails lol.

I think that my reason for starting this blog is two-fold. First…a selfish reason… it allows me to have a special place to keep the recipes for and photos of my baking/cooking. I took a level one photography course but I have already forgotten most of it. Hopefully by photographing my baking I will keep up my knowledge. The other reason is that I thought that rather than try to explain a 10 step recipe to other people that I could tell people to check out my blog… seems reasonable right? My future sister in law (fingers crossed), 'K', recently told me that she is starting a blog and has begun that journey. I think that this also inspired me to start doing some of the things that I think of doing rather than just allowing them to be passing thoughts. It might take a while to get a lot of recipes but you have to start somewhere right? Before Christmas may have been a better time as I really ramp up for Christmas by baking!! oh well!! My birthday is in 2 days so this will be something new to work on this year while I work on my other life goals ...or wait for them to materialize... another topic for another day...

In my ‘About' section I talked about the fact that I am certainly not a professional baker. I should add that I’m also not professional blogger… amateur might even be a stretch.. so we will see how this adventure goes. I hope that other people who are not professional in the kitchen can see that you do not have to be and that it is OKAY to use cake mix along with some delicious homemade icing and decorations…at least no one has ever complained to me… I hope to inspire others to whip up a batch of cookies or a cake for that next staff meeting or for your child’s treat day! It does not take that much time and there is just so much satisfaction in making something yourself to share with others. I feel like baking is almost a dying tradition and with such focus these days on going back to whole foods and knowing what is in your meals it seems ironic that baking is dying out! Most of my friends do not bake...does this mean that in a few generations no one will bake at all?!!?! *gasp*

I commit to posting a new recipe weekly. I'm lucky to have an entire office of often stressed out social workers and good friends who are baking challenged (we are slowly changing this!) that I am sure will help eat my goodies! I appreciate you all!! Most of my recipes will be ones that have been made in my family's home for years. Any recipe's shared from other blogs or books will have a link back to the original. I feel that recipes are meant to be shared and credit should certainly be given when it is due.

So here we go…day one…fingers crossed!!

-Kristen
