Sugar Cookie Glaze - Valentine's Day cookies
So you have made the cookies and now... THE ICING...
I have used two different techniques in the past... one I am still working on perfecting. The first is a glaze and it is the easier of the two! I have used this glaze for the sugar cookies that I make at Christmas too!
Sometimes glaze will not harden completely. As a result, they can be difficult stack in a jar because you will get little dents in the smooth surface of the cookie. You also might have any piped design flake off if they are in a jar...But if you are making cookies to put out on a plate and are not going to go crazy with a design save yourself the trouble and stick with this glaze...you'll thank me later... A glaze will also have a nice shine to it and keeps the cookie chewy inside due to the moisture on top.
INGREDIENTS:
2 cups sifted icing sugar
2 Tbsp water
1 Tbsp clear corn syrup
METHOD:
Combine the above ingredients. You can even mix it by hand if you really needed to but I would stick with a mixer. The consistency should be goopy like white Elmer's glue. That really is the best way to describe it. You can add more water if you need to but do it little by little....a little goes a long way. If the icing is too thin it will not stay on the top of the cookie and will run down the sides. Next add the food coloring* of your choice.
*You can use liquid food coloring but you will not get deep colors. It will come out more pastel. If you want deep and rich colors go for the Wilton gel food coloring. You can purchase the colors individually from Bulk Barn for $2.59 and they will last for a few years.
Now what I do is pour the food coloring on a dinner plate and dip the cookies in face down. Let the excess drip off or run the surface against the edge of the plate if there is a lot of icing dripping. Then flip the cookie over and let dry. The icing should be thick enough that it will not run over the edges of the cookie and will look very pretty when done. I like that there is no icing on the side. I think it looks very finished and with the dip method it is so fast to do.
Obviously you can do as many colors as you want. To make things a bit easier sometimes I take a glob of the same color of food coloring with a toothpick and swirl it into the icing on the plate. It gives kind of a tie-dyed look without needing to make a bunch of colors. You can also do this in white icing with multiple colors.
And here are all of our little cookies finally dressed up. I think they’re pretty cute and the glaze was a breeze :)
I love how colourful they look in our cookie jar too!! …if only they would last until the next time that we have company over…
